Historical Display Goes Up in Sumter County

Press Release Date

We are excited to announce that another set of the "Foundations of American Law & Government Display" has been placed in a government building. This time the documents go up in the new Sumter County Courthouse in Americus, Ga.

On February 19th, the documents were first exhibited for all of the public to see. The whole process of displaying the documents begin when David McLemore, a resident of Americus and a deacon at Plans Baptist Church, attended a county meeting in November of 2009 to make a request to have the historical documents hung in the new Sumter County Courthouse. After gaining a unanimous vote, the Board of Commissioners gave David the go-ahead to seek funds from the community for the acquisition of the documents. David then called upon local churches and asked for donations. As the word spread, private individuals also began to donate money to the cause.

David McLemore said, “I want to thank all of the churches and individuals who gave to the purchase of these documents so they can be read by all individuals who visit the courthouse.” McLemore further stated, “I am not stopping with Sumter County. My plans are to contact other surrounding counties, to see if I can encourage their citizens to get The American Law and Government Display hung in their courthouse.”

Sumter County is the 13th county in Georgia to showcase the documents since Gov. Sonny Perdue signed House Bill 941 into law. Ten Commandments-Georgia congratulates Sumter County for taking this bold step and taking advantage of this new law.

On July 1, 2006, Gov. Sonny Perdue signed into law H.B.941 http://www.legis.state.ga.us/legis/2005_06/fulltext/hb941.htm authorizing local governments to erect historical displays that include a copy of the Ten Commandments. These displays pave the way for communities to further educate their citizens regarding historical facts about our country's founding.

These historical documents are being made available through the ministry of Ten Commandments-GA, Inc. We serve as a resource for private citizens, churches, civic clubs, and organizations to purchase these documents and to present them for approval to their local governing boards, commissions, and councils. TC-GA has beautifully designed to legal specifications the nine-piece historical display. You may view these unique designs by logging on to www.thoushalt.org.
